528Advertisements on 3 Mobile Broadband

posted on July 24th, 2009

Mobile broadband provider, 3 UK, has devised a new way of displaying advertisements through an ad panel that would appear on the computer screen whenever a customer plugs in their dongle to connect to its internet client.

When the subscriber attaches the broadband device to the computer, an advertising panel along with the connection manager will appear on the dashboard. The advertisements would appear in the form of pop-ups.

3 is in the process of signing up with companies for serving ads through this new service. This innovative concept has already been experimented by 3 in Austria and the 6% click through rate seen there was highly impressive.

According to 3mobile, displaying advertisements will not interfere with the user’s internet experience and they cannot be disabled. On the other hand, prospective advertisers are being lured to promote their products to 3’s large customer base in a prominent manner.

Head of Advertising at 3 UK, Neil Andrews commented that because of the sheer strength of their network, 3 has been able to promote innovative mobile concepts and content along with advertising. He also said that 3 utilises its mobile screen space for effective selling of brands.

As things stand currently, the addition of graphic content due to the advertisements will affect the consumer’s data allowance. However, it remains to be seen whether this additional data transfer can be exempted from the consumer’s allowance, as otherwise consumers are likely to react angrily to this initiative.
