541All You Really Need to Know about Sydney Botox

posted on August 18th, 2009

Botox is now established amongst Sydney’s fashionable set in fact it is becoming an integral part of any beauty routine for many in the Harbour City.

But I never fail to be astounded by the rumours about the treatment.

Here I have listed some of the urban legends that I encounter in my work as a doctor at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Misconception # 1: I could lose my facial expressions!

Beneath the skin of the face are 60 or so muscles. Their extended use may result in fine lines to appear. When too much Botox has been used the facial muscles can sometimes become too relaxed. More often than not physicians use relatively minute dosages to make you look refreshed, nevertheless you will of course maintain your normal expression.

So the proper dosage of Botox in the appropriate place means one should have a softening of any fine lines without reducing facial expression.

Misconception # 2: Botulinum is a toxic substance!
There is a grain of truth in this argument. Its scientific term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too great a quantity may relax facial muscles that you do not want loosened and may even make you very sick.

However to maintain some perspective: a well-known chemist’s expression states that ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. All medications in a large quantity may make you unwell. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.

Misconception # 3: It will hurt!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician utilises a needle finer than hair. Several individuals have equated the shots to being bit by mosquitoes. It is unquestionably less painful than something like a vaccination.

Misconception # 4: I might lose feeling in my face!
Untrue. Botox targets the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on sensate nerve fibers. Only the ability to relax your muscles is affected by Botox.

Misconception # 5. You can’t stop having Botox otherwise the wrinkles become more noticable!
Also untrue.

A Botox treatment will last around 3 months. Any treatments after the initial one commonly last a little longer. The wrinkles will eventually reappear as the muscle returns to normal. But they will certainly not be any worse than previously.

Even should you never have Botox shots again - those lines will in all likelihood be a little better than if you had not undergone the procedure. Mainly because your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
