590Physically-challenged Badminton Player Continues Dream

posted on October 8th, 2009

Despite player a number of badminton sets in tournaments here and abroad, Pramod Bhagat still aims to finish his education.

Earlier this year, Bhagat clinched the World Championship in Badminton for the Disable in Seoul, South Korea. Despite his physical disabilities, he still managed to lift his badminton racket to stand out among the rest in the badminton competition.

However, his participation in this tournament came with a price. Hirakud, an educational institution where Bhagat is enrolled, decided not to let him take the final exams due to poor attendance.

Understanding this decision, Bhagat said that he will still continue with his studies. According to the decision of the school, Bhagat can still take the test next year.

In preparation for the tournament, Bhagat underwent a two-month training which basically means that he could not attend classes. The South Korean competition was sponsored by the International Badminton Association for Disabled (IBAD).

His sacrifice paid off. Bhagat won the single standing-waist-below-class-one event. He defeated Thailand’s Sub Pong in the finals.

Meanwhile, Hirakud Principal Nisakar Mallick said that they are reconsidering Bhagat’s case considering that he just brought honor for the country because of his win in South Korea.

The young player had a left leg defect. He still continued playing badminton and launched a professional career at age 15. He hails from Bargah district.

He’s expected to compete in upcoming local and international competitions in the future.
