710Sydney Botox - an Introduction

posted on January 10th, 2010

BoTox has become ingrained amongst Sydney’s stylish set in fact it is becoming a grooming necessity for many in the city.

But I never fail to be startled by the various myths which have originated around the painless procedure.

I have outlined below some of the more falsehoods that I hear frequently in my work as a physician at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Mistake # 1: My facial muscles might stiffen up!

There are approximately sixty muscles below the skin of your face. These muscles ordinarily work in harmony, however from persistent movement wrinkles may begin to appear. Too many treatments of BoTox have the effect of the muscles of the forehead becoming a liile bit less taut. The amount injected by virtually all doctors result in you seeming less tired, but still you will always keep your natural expression.

By injecting the proper amount of the BoTox in just the right muscles an expressive face is protected whilst any fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed.

Mistake # 2: BoTox is a deadly poison!
Actually there is a little truth in this statement. Its scientific name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In massive quantities it may end up in loss of muscle tone or may cause sickness.

Chemists have a well-known phrase that states ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. Any drug will make a person extremely sick in big enough dosages. If you drink too much water it will kill you.

Mistake # 3: BoTox injections will be painful!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician will use needles finer than human hair. Some individuals have likened the shots to getting bitten by bugs. Definitely not in the same ball park as compared to having a blood test.

Mistake # 4: BoTox will deaden my face!
Totally false. BoTox affects the neuromuscular junction, and not on sensate nerve fibers. BoTox just targets the ability to relax muscles.

Mistake # 5. You cannot stop having BoTox or else you will develop even worse fine lines and wrinkles than before!
Once Again this is simply false.

The first treatment will be effective for about three months. Any further treatments after the first one should be effective for a few weeks more. The wrinkles will eventually reform as the muscle regains its normal function. Even So they definitely won’t be any more pronounced than when you commenced your treatment.

Even if you never had BoTox ever again - any wrinkles will likely be a little less pronounced than if you had never been treated. This, of course is mainly the case due to the fact you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
