816Losing with Pocket Aces

posted on March 31st, 2010

One of the worst feelings those of us who play Texas Hold em online poker can experience is getting dealt pocket aces and losing the hand. On those occasional instances when he look down at our cards through cupped poker online hands and see A-A staring back at us (I prefer the aces of spades and clubs, aesthetically) is is usually a joyous site to behold. But losing with A-A is always worse than losing with any other hand. Even though we know rationally that we can lose with it, no hand is unbeatable after all, it still stings. I was playing a table game of No Limit hold em poker at a casino in Upstate New York recently during a trip and experienced said sting. I was doing well, building up chips and also getting fortuitous cards dealt to me. Then one hand I got dealt Aces. I raised, and an old man to the left of me reraised all in. everyone else folded. He had about 150 dollars in chips, I had slightly less, and of course I called him, with visions of a huge stack of chips dancing in my head. He turned over his cards to reveal 10-10. Stupid old man! Well, I don’t think I need to tell you which one of us hit a set. When a 10 came on the turn, I was toast. Now this particular example dosen’t really apply, since I made the right call and got some bad luck, but the overall lesson is that you should never assume you’re pocket aces will win every time. In fact, they’ll lose about 25% of the time. So don’t be frais to throw them away if you know you’re beat.
